So what really inspires you and motivates you? Is it an abstract like danger, adventure, achievement? Or a tangible like travel, property, gaining wisdom, certificates? Or meeting new people, putting your point across, taking on an organisational challenge? What is it for you?
What hobbies and pastimes do you enjoy? Are they still challenging you or are they a little jaded now? Time to try something new – how about a cookery class, a language class, pottery or a new sport? What do you always promise yourself you will do when you have more time? I am always meaning to set aside a little time for sketching, and when I have more money, owning a boat. Do you think I could get started in some way on these two interests today? Probably! I can easily free up a little time each day, each week: half an hour here and there! Perhaps, like me, you are good at making excuses! We seem content to indulge in the Utopian possibility of “some day” or “later” or even “not yet” and so a decade slips past without pause!
So many people trouble about dating…throw yourself into your interests and see what happens! If you work a little towards each hobby interest you have pretty soon you will meet some like-minded persons! And if they don’t suit you, mayhap their contacts may! Open yourself to building a constantly greater network of people with similar interests to your own. Try local politics, or a business networking group, or join a social club!
Are you exactly where you want to be? Even so, it is time for a new horizon! Is there a part time course you could get involved in at your local college, or a correspondence course you’d enjoy, or even an Open University course so your spare time can be channelled to improving your future prospects? I joined a correspondence course in writing once, and you’d be amazed at what your further education college offers for evening classes: how about pottery or flower arranging? Or start a new sport, take up a martial art: so many opportunities to work towards an extra qualification. You could start a blog describing your progress!
Even with very little spare time and surplus money you can pursue your dreams if you have passion enough: one of my piano pupils was a full time fire officer who also held a pilot’s licence and owned a quarter share in a light aircraft kept at his nearby airfield. He would fly his family on holiday for the fun of it! Money, he’d say: you can’t take it with you!
Write down 7 events from your past decade when you felt totally elated, really exhilarated by a personal achievement! It can be anything from climbing a mountain to winning an award or a race to mastering a new skill to cooking a meal for your family. Something that gave you a real buzz! It’s time to start working towards a new goal to get that buzz again! Dwell on how you felt on each occasion: feel that again! It’s a good feeling and brings warmth to your self appreciation: there will always be folk around you who want to belittle your accomplishments and your skill levels but inside you know you can be the best!
So what have you lined up for yourself this year? Something new? A vacation in a new part of the world? Learn a new language? Build your first website? Start a home business? Learn to cook Indian curries using authentic spices? Bird-watching? Star gazing? Poetry? Watercolours? Choose something new and go for it with all your heart! Every new interest pursued enthusiastically brings zest to your whole week – something to look forward to, a new chance to believe in yourself, new people to understand. No rut sticking!
I ask questions all the time! I was working on a construction project and I asked the kitchen fitter there so many questions he decided I must be an amateur or I wouldn’t need to ask so much! So many folk hide behind a buttoned lip and miss out on so much useful knowledge. I don’t mind what people think of me: I suspect my floor tiling told the real story of whether I was a pro or not
Rudyard Kipling summed up this wisdom in his incredible short but timeless verse:
“I keep six honest serving men,
They taught me all I knew,
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.”
Can you memorize that? It’s a grand slogan! It’ll come back to you time and again when you are unsure of yourself. Try memorizing a couple of lines of poetry each week, keeping them in mind constantly. Buy yourself a big poetry anthology book full of lots of different poets’ work. Browse through and see what captivates you! Your memory will expand if you do this week by week. I like John Clare’s immortal lines:
“I am – yet what I am none cares or knows,
My friends forsake me like a memory lost;
I am the self consumer of my woes…”
This is a very fine 3 verse poem: see if you can track it down for yourself! If you memorize 2 lines a week you will know the whole poem in 9 weeks’ time. And who wrote
“I remember, I remember,
The house where I was born,”?
My favourite anthology is The New Oxford Book of English Verse. Poetry soothes the troubled brow. It energizes your memory cells because verse is akin to music. Try setting a poem to music yourself – just sing the words as you read! Many people advocate Meditation but I’ve never had any enthusiasm for sitting still! Instead I walk in a garden every day: not my own, a small park that runs down to the sea about 3 streets from here. I can watch the seasons unfold in the trees and I feel I unwind in the green peacefulness. I recite my chosen lines of poetry as I walk! It just brings a little quiet recreation into my hectic day. For recreation recreates your soul! And like washing, you need to recreate daily!
If anything bores you or makes you ill at ease, leave it. Don’t fear yourself a quitter. No sense in bashing your head against a brick wall! Cut yourself off from the negative energy vortex. Negative energy spins around on itself sucking the life out of everything near it. Some people radiate negative energy! Is radiate is quite the right description? Meet people who inspire you with positive ideas and happiness instead, people who encourage you to be yourself and pursue your dreams. Swap “Oh you could never do that, what’s the use?” tiredness for “Of course you can! It’s fun and you’ll be good at this!” vitality. Is there someone you know who buzzes with positive energy? Can you set aside a little time to involve them on a project?
How do you feel as you awake each day? How did you feel ten years ago? What would you like to feel like? Where would you like to awake and with whom? Bright positive zestful vivacious zing! Where you are right now in your life is the fruit of your labours! Plant a tree to bear the fruit you want to eat in ten years from now! Realise that you can achieve whatever you desire to, give yourself the time and space to do so and make a start today! Good karma!
