Are you just a little tired of living for others? But if you dared to mention this everyone would call you selfish! I’m here to say: it is good to be selfish. Because only by truly pleasing yourself and living your life on your own terms can you ever be free to do anything good for others. So that’s not really too selfish, is it? Be unafraid of other people’s concept of you.

You require three key elements to live well: purpose, passion and focus.

Purpose

If you listen to everyone else and strive to keep them happy and say the right things and conform, then you are not living on purpose. Purpose is the choice you make of how you want to live doing what you want to do. Other people will just have to get along around you or go elsewhere. Buddhism dispenses with the idea of deity, that is, a higher being who makes demands of you, and instead concentrates your personal power on developing your inner self. That is pretty refreshing I think! There is no greater being than your self. So listen what you believe and do what you want. This will empower you to help other people from a position of advantage later on. Living your life for others, rather than being self directed, leads you to experience a total drain of energy and saps your enjoyment of the moment. Be bold and consider your needs first!

Passion

You don’t have to be madly in love with everything you do, but it certainly helps you get through the boring routine stuff easily! I hate getting up in the morning but I love writing so I bribe myself by setting writing as my first task of the day. Result! Even having a slight preference for what you are doing is better than tackling tasks you hate. But once you begin to live life on purpose according to what you really want, then you will become more and more drawn to pursuits that fill you with passion! That’s great! My criteria for which projects to prioritise is simply to focus primarily upon the ones I love to do. Because I will put my best effort into these, and there’s no sense in a half hearted effort. Pursue your passion and see how good life gets!

Focus

There is no virtue in multi-tasking. Just focus upon one aspect of one project at a time and do the best you can. Approach the most intensive tasks at your highest energy levels and take a break to refresh yourself as soon as you notice a drop in your energy. You will soon discover your peak performance times each day and each week. Remember that old Friday afternoon feeling when you worked for a boss? Once you become the boss you won’t need to struggle through a task whilst your heart is already in the weekend: you can just begin the weekend early and get back to work when you feel ready again. You take full control of all 168 hours each week. That is powerful!

Whatever you set your mind to accomplish can be achieved with the correct step by step actions. If you fail, start over with a new approach and consider asking advice – everything you want to do has probably been done by someone else at some time. Save time and energy by learning from their mistakes instead of your own!

The really awesome thing to realise about life is that you have total responsibility for all 168 hours every week – even if you choose to work for someone else, it’s still your choice, and you will achieve whatever you focus on. If you focus on slouching on the sofa watching TV and drinking soda pop, you will become a couch potato. Easy. If you focus on writing a book or building a company or planting a garden, you will achieve that too. Focus on your purpose, feel some passion for what you do, discover the easiest method to accomplish what you want and take the actions required. Keep on until it’s done. It’s great to look back and know you did it your way! All yours! Take it easy!
