Law Of Attraction Versus Manifestation: Which Is The Truth?

Which do you go for? The Law of Attraction or The Law of Manifestation? Is there any truth in either?

Are these popular so-called “Laws” for real or they just modern popular media hype? Does someone stand to profit big time by convincing you there is truth within this perception? Is this perception reality? Or just hype?

The Law of Attraction gathered a lot of media attention after the release of The Secret film along with Rhonda Byrne’s book of the same name. But is there really any truth in this idea? Is it a philosophy or a possible way of life? Is it a religion or a science? Have the rich and powerful really withheld this knowledge from humanity throughout history? Is knowledge power? And why has this suddenly come to light if it has been purposefully hidden for centuries? Who now “allows” this? Weak, very weak!

And yes, I own the book, The Secret, and have read it, and no, I do not believe the fairy tales I read in other books either – nice try but try again :)

What is the Law of Manifestation? Is it the same as the Law of Attraction? Are these two names for one and the same thing and is it really a scientific law like gravity? Is gravity really a law? Or just a perception?

I am not going to answer these intriguing questions for you! The interest in Life is to pose questions for yourself and take as long as you want to ponder on possible answers to such questions. The answers you accept as reality will differ as you age. There is no fixed right or wrong – simply, at any one time, in any situation, your preferred perception becomes your reality.

You can go along with any philosophy you choose and try to live your life according to that. People used to say the Earth was flat and so many people went along with that philosophy, thought it obvious, or did not think about it at all. Now we believe the Earth to be a sphere and suppose the flat Earth people to be wrong. But people after us will have their own philosophy and suppose us to be wrong! It happens! When enough people believe a perception which fits in with the spirit of the times then many a science is built around that perception until it is believed to be a reality. What you believe becomes true for you and you go with the consequences and make them fit your theory.

You suppose the ground to be solid beneath your feet. You walk on, suspecting nothing. Then without realising, you are walking over ice! The ice does not support your weight – it cracks and you fall into the icy water beneath. Do you drown or quickly freeze to death? You choose! You should have been more observant of where you were walking, but alas, your perception became your reality and you suffered the consequences!

The Law of Attraction states that you think and speak of things in a certain way and attract the consequences towards you. You exist in a world where consequences are awaiting your commands and when you speak those things make their way to you: they already exist in waiting. I find this a particularly bizarre concept! The whole philosophy of the Secret is wrapped around this one idea – so what happens to the alternate consequences – do they await someone else or will they come to you later if you rephrase your phrases? Weird!

I don’t go along with the Law of Attraction at all since it suggests that people in poor countries attract poverty to themselves which is obviously nonsense. I actually see two results of this philosophy – first it is a salve to the rich American’s conscience: due to the supposed Law of Attraction it isn’t his fault most of the world is poor: they thought themselves into it therefore he need not share his wealth since it is entirely of the making of his own attraction and will not benefit anyone else – only those who express their thought phrases exactly in the correct manner will enjoy riches! Er? Are you convinced? No? Nor me.

Secondly, the Law of Attraction idea as popularized by the Secret book is responsible for an entire new industry which is simply selling information on this so called Law. A law which only benefits rich Americans! Who no longer feel guilty about being the richest people in a very poor world! OK! Does this resonate with you? Have you ever actually attracted anything good towards you? No? So why would you continue to struggle to believe something which does not work for you? Have you ever considered it might be false information?

Anyone who is rich and successful can cheerfully point to any philosophy and say that is what led them to become rich. They may or may not actually believe it for themselves. They may get rich selling you a book about it, rather like the dodgy Victorian travelling salesman who would offer you a bottle of still water which claimed to be the magic elixir of eternal youth. And if you believe still water has magical properties for you, then it shall have! When a doctor claims his sugar pill will heal you – it does if you believe him and expect to manifest the symptoms of health in your body!

So what is manifestation and how does it differ from attraction? Or is it the same thing? Or just hype?

If attraction is where you draw things towards you like an iron magnet attracts filings then manifestation is where you envision something within your imagination, creating a dream picture inside your mind and expect it to become reality. Instead of the result being drawn to you from outside of you, manifestation creates the thing you dreamed of from within your inner being! From you to the outside, as opposed to from the outside to you!

Attraction is towards you and manifestation is from within you. Manifestation sounds more believable to me but it still doesn’t explain why poor people in poor countries stay poor! It seems these so called Laws only work in an arena of opportunity and plenty…so I think the word Law, as in the Law of Gravity, is hype! Gravity would appear to work just as efficiently in poor countries as it does in rich countries! Or would a rich American looking to shift his uncomfortable feelings of guilt argue with me on this? Would a rich successful American be able to neutralize the Law of Gravity? By expressing the correct phrases correctly?

Western religions encourage the perception that we are evil and a dreadful fate awaits us, attraction or not, whereas eastern religions suppose that we create our reality from within our deep inner being and there is no deity but our Self. If there is no deity, then there is no one to disapprove of us and send us to Hell. Which seems nicer to me. Freer. More inspirational! If Self is the ultimate reality then I find room for improvement – if, however, I am condemned already to Hell, then there can be no improvement and therefore all reality becomes useless and meaningless.

How is it that such opposing philosophies have grown up? Why do we allow them to dominate our waking thoughts? How can such chosen perception help humanity to improve its physical condition? Why do we care about and try to believe in attraction or manifestation? Have you truly ever attracted or manifested anything at all, no matter how hard you tried? Did you suppose, on failing, that your mind was weak, or your soul ignoble? Why sell yourself such blatant falsehood?

Some of our experiences may be a consequence of our actions: if I tread on ice and it does not hold my weight it will crack under me and I may fall into icy water if I do not jump onto solid land quick enough. But clearly not all our experiences are a consequence of our intentions. Indeed it may be true that I chose to take the bus to work, but if the bus should have a puncture, is that my imagination at work? Or the fault of the bus company for not checking the tyre? Or a freak accident as a result of a nail in the road?

The Law of Attraction tells me I attracted the nail to that exact spot in the road and willed the bus to drive over it. OK! You want to believe all that, you go right ahead! I’m just plumping for the accident theory! A nail happened to be on the road and the tyre happened to go over it and it happened to puncture the tyre. Which is easier for you to believe? Or do you have an alternate theory? One which will work as well in a poor country as a rich one and isn’t there to salve anyone’s guilt? Good!

What is an accident? If motorist A attracts motorist B to collide, then how does that affect motorist B? Is it fair to motorist B? Does motorist A’s willpower dominate? Did they both happen to attract each other to collide as a freak coincidence? Was neither looking where they were going? Is motorist B merely a figment of the imagination of motorist A? Can one person collide or must they invent someone to collide with? Or could it just have happened by chance – a freak accident?

Can things happen by chance or do we have to predestine everything? How can both motorists choose to collide? Did the stars dictate it happen by fate? Was it the council’s fault? Or did they just get in each other’s way? Should either or both of them have got up earlier or been somewhere else? If one person is in the wrong place is it reasonable the other should take the consequence? Did a bad spirit blind them both temporarily to cause mischievous mishap? Were they attracted accidentally to one another? Does anyone care? Does it affect anything of any consequence to anyone? Should we analyse this?

The Law of Attraction and the theory of Hell and even the theory of Self fail to convince me. I am not convinced we have a Life purpose to fulfill – who decided that? What happens if we want to be good at several things? I like art and chess and music and swimming and cycling and mountain walking and pottery and sewing and blogging and writing poetry and studying history and I intend to become excellent at them all – is that my Life purpose? Or a list of my activities?

Take every good care not to randomly buy into philosphies and religious ideas that sell your reality short! Or masquerade as science! The truth of existence is far different to any propounded theory yet devised! Make your own way in life and take everything with the english pinch of salt – some ideas work in one situation or country but most theories are our attempt to make sense of a reality too great for our limited perception. I am completely unable to see all the surface of the Earth at once so why do I try to make up theories to pretend I can see everything? One reality when I swim, another when I walk.

Is the spiritual abstract world of your imagination and dreams within you more real than the solid three dimensional hot and cold world you experience around your body? What is “real”? What is “reality” for you? Do you have a waking reality and a sleep reality? Can the two merge or are they always separate? Does your inner mind really know best eternally? Or do we simply react to our surroundings, as and when? Is there anything else out there? Do you care? Can you know?

If I am preparing to go to the office in the morning and the postman knocks on my door – did I attract him? Or is he just doing his job? Would he have knocked even if I had departed for the office earlier? Does he really exist? Did I invent him? Do I really care?

I want to tip the Laws of Manifestation and Attraction in the trash and go back to the drawing board: we are not children and shall not be so easily hoodwinked! Convince me again! Please feel free to expound your own favourite concepts in the comments below! Thankyou.
